My client/users for this space are a family of four. The woman is now walking up to the space, she sees an inviting building with light pouring into it, she can see inside of the space. The entrance is in the center. She notices the shadows of the leaves from the trees dancing on the exterior wall. She hears the crunch of the hardwood mulch which is the path to the entrance; she also notices the sweetly fermented scent that it emits. She opens the door and sees openness and light. Horizontal planes of a deep rich color define and organize this space which includes a place for cooking and eating, a food preparation surface, a work space where the computer resides and places for sitting and lounging. The walls are light in color. She always feels this multi-purpose living room is much bigger than it really is. She can see outside the back of the building and sees the house she used to live in; this keeps her in touch with that life and affirms that progress is being made on their permanent home. She looks out thru the front windows and sees her neighbors across the street. This room centers her world, it is where she connects with her family, she reflects on her past, hopes for the future and stays connected with her community. On each side of this center living area is an opening in the wall, these openings lead to the private spaces. The shape of the opening is rectangular, but more square than a typical door opening would be. The wall behind these openings is of a contrasting color, it draws her into the room. There is no door, just a short hallway which blocks the view into the room. This is her bedroom; the walls are painted a warm color. There is some natural light and windows for fresh air, but it feels like a protective womb. The shape is rectangular, the room is small. The ceiling is lower in this area. This is her retreat.
